Artist and Bio Statement

Bio

Whitney Evans graduated with a BFA in Ceramics from Eastern Washington University in 2018 and currently resides in Spokane, WA.

She is a multi-disciplinary artist that continues an evolving development of her “Toast” themes, autobiographical, and surrealistic narratives that she applies to functional and fine art ceramics, sculpture, mixed media and digital works.

She attempts to engage viewers with content that’s directly subject to personal thoughts, hidden interpretations, with Dada, Pop art, Harlem Renaissance, and Minimalist influences.

Whitney has exhibited in the Jordan Schnitzer museum, Terrain Art Projects “Terrain 11” (2018), “Terrain 12” (2019), the July 2020 "Express Yourself," exhibition. She has also participated in both 2018-2019, Spokane Bazaar's.

Her signature “Galaxy Toast” design is on public display on the Signal Box located on Queen and Division, Spokane, WA.

"I find joy in overmanipulating and re-contextualizing specific images/objects and details throughout different mediums. I repeat small details that I deem important in the moment."

BLM Series: Artist Statment

Near the beginning of 2020, I felt deeply urged to make or have this virtual reality take form into something physical; a social media zine perhaps, representing unexpected complex layers built on the viral and catastrophic that coexist with justice and societal healing.

My drywall pieces “Exhibit A, Exhibit B” were a time-based, mixed media series of myself consecutively watching 60+ days of protests among the biggest and smallest cities in America. Observing, collecting and processing this “social media data” virtually, physically, and mentally.

If I had “posted” a meme, an article, quotes, or screenshots of pivotal moments on the drywall then it seemed to hold some accountability off the screen. Such as, it was there, and not scrolled by. Coincidently, key things were lost in my own panel's random algorithm of placement, in a way almost mimicking a “social’s” feed algorithm.

The large panels represent past experiences more directed at the toxicity on social media during the 2020 BLM protests and the strength of communities nationwide. Meanwhile, the “asterisk” cut piece is while experiencing current situations. The end result has left me reeling in the most toxic parts of social media while embracing the positive and proactive.

Toastasauraus
A toast head is incorporated onto a randomly drawn dinosaur body in a comical way. Sometimes the “sauraus” is moody and likes to fight with its surrounding environment, and sometimes its starving for attention waiting for a companion.

Toast-Bat; is both salty and sweet, sometimes mischievous but usually an insightful being. They lay dormant untill Fall season.
